The story is by Georgios Kortatosis (1550-1610), a Cretan Renaissance writer, about two haughty female warriors who, while hunting on Mount Idi in Crete, are courted by two young men and reject them, but in the end, they fall deeply in love at the behest of the god Aphrodite. The music is modern, but not extremely avant-garde, with colorful rhythms and orchestrations that are typical of ballet music. The coupling piece is a saxophone concerto composed in 2009, featuring soloist Theodore Kerkezos, a leading saxophonist in Greece to whom this work was dedicated.
