Formed in 1994 around violinist Christian Tetzlaff and his sister Tanya, the quartet—which also includes former Bamberg Symphony Orchestra concertmistress Elisabeth Kufferath and Zurich Opera House Orchestra principal Hanna Weinmeister. They are regulars at European music festivals, and their performances have been described as “dramatic and energetic.” They also toured Japan in 2014 and have been steadily gaining popularity there. On this album—their second release on the ONDINE label—they present two string quartets by Beethoven, whose 250th birthday will be celebrated in 2020. Both works are highly popular and representative of Beethoven’s late period. String Quartet No. 13, completed in 1825, was actually written after No. 15 in chronological order; at its premiere, the final movement featured the “Great Fugue.” However, following the publisher’s advice, Beethoven replaced it with a different movement; as a result, the “Great Fugue” now bears a separate opus number. On this album, the Tetzlaff Quartet recreates the form of the premiere, featuring the majestic “Great Fugue” in the final movement. Although No. 15 was originally conceived as a four-movement work, Beethoven—having recovered from illness—inserted a beautiful third movement titled “A Sacred Song of Thanks to God by One Healed from Illness, in the Lydian Mode.” As a result, the work took on a much longer form.
