The work was originally intended for the celebration of the Archduke's inauguration as archbishop in 1820, but he was unable to make it in time for that date, and it was eventually premiered in St. Petersburg in 1824. Although a major work reflecting Beethoven's noble intentions, this religious work is not often performed in churches.Michael Gielen, a great conductor, passed away in March 2019. He described the work as \"un-Christian,\" but he deeply loved the spirituality of the work and performed it many times. There have been several recordings of the work, including a 2005 performance with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra and a 1987 performance with the Deutsches Rundfunk Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks Baden-Baden. This is a \"historic recording\" of a performance with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1985. This is a \"historic recording\" made in 1985 with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (then the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra). You can fully enjoy the sprightly performance with \"transparent sound\" that is typical of Gielen.
