As if in response to that achievement, Barbara Hannigan—who has also begun releasing recordings on the Alpha label—presents a new recording that likewise confronts an era of hardship. Conducting the elite Dutch ensemble, the Ludwig Orchestra, she has selected for this album three works that she has long pursued in the concert hall and for which she has garnered high praise— —two 20th-century avant-garde composers who have long since passed away (Grisey and Nono are likely particularly familiar names to fans of Japanese modern and contemporary orchestral music) and, surprisingly, a symphony from Haydn’s middle period!\n\nWith “Passion” as its theme, this album features a seemingly unexpected arrangement: Haydn’s Symphony No. 49—said to have been composed based on Passion music—is sandwiched between the two 20th-century avant-garde works. Haydn’s work is no run-of-the-mill symphony either; it is an unconventional piece that begins with a lengthy slow movement in a minor key. This program serves as a perfect showcase of Hannigan’s status as a world-class conductor. Flanking this meticulously crafted performance—which brings out the work’s beauty—are Nono’s unaccompanied vocal pieces, which evolved into his unique style through his experiences with the Spectral School and the electronic music movement, and Grisey’s cycle, which Hannigan also performed with the Berlin Philharmonic under Rattle. and the flow of the program—which, in turn, brings out the modernity of Haydn’s works—is nothing short of exquisite. Grisey’s work, which illuminates the gradual loss of humanity through quotations from various poems spanning from antiquity to the present, is a piece that truly demands to be heard in this specific context.
