Performed on a model instrument by Grenser of Dresden—from a time when the number of keys had hardly increased from that of the 18th-century flute traverso—and accompanied by a fortepiano, the program features the music of the renowned master Kurau, who was born in Germany and made his mark in Denmark. Often referred to as the “Beethoven of the flute world,” this prolific composer’s intricate sonic universe is well known to performers; however, returning to the instruments of that era allows one to appreciate its richness even more fully. Furthermore, when heard alongside these works, the Serenade, Op. 41—an arrangement supervised by the composer himself and based on Beethoven’s early work (the Trio Serenade, Op. 25)—suddenly takes on a whole new charm.
