Alexander, a newly admitted political prisoner, catches the warden’s eye due to his appearance and his strong sense of pride, and is subjected to terrible treatment almost immediately upon arrival. This is the story of the prisoners as seen through his eyes: Filka, known as “Luka”; Skratov, who murdered his unfaithful lover; and Aliya, a Tatar boy.
