Because he has such a multifaceted grasp of both Bach as a composer and the piano as an instrument, he delivers an exceptionally beautiful performance—one that richly resonates from his Steinway while largely avoiding the use of the pedal. Published some 20 years after the first volume—which had a strong character of etudes—the second volume consists of works that are musically and compositionally sophisticated and avant-garde; Schiff’s deep understanding of the works is even more vividly expressed in this performance than in the previously released first volume.
