She fell in love with Theseus, the hero who, guided by her, defeated the Minotaur lurking in the kingdom’s labyrinth. Though they left the kingdom together, he unexpectedly abandoned her on the island of Naxos. There have been no shortage of masterful musical works that skillfully depict the anger and despair toward a cowardly hero. On this album, you can enjoy the striking stylistic contrasts between the late Baroque composers A. Scarlatti (Italy) and Handel (Germany \u0026amp; England), and Haydn (Austria) from the Classical period—all presented with Arcangelo’s superbly refined performances on period instruments. It’s also worth noting that Haydn’s works—originally composed to be accompanied by a single piano—are presented here in grand orchestral versions.
