It is a \"rescue opera\" (the protagonist falls into unjustified danger, but is saved by the people around him) that has been performed since the French Revolution, and while it has a style in the tradition of French operas such as Boiardieu, it also has an Italian flair reminiscent of Rossini. It is recorded that the opera was performed 525 times from its premiere in 1825 to 1896, but it is not performed at all nowadays. This recording was made in 1950 in Vienna, where the Niederösterreich Tonkünstler Orchestra (Wiener Tonkünstlerorchester) and the singers give an exquisite performance with traditional Viennese sound.
