Originally an oboe player in a military band, Hökff traveled to Poland as a member of a regiment, where he caught the attention of the governor of Warsaw and became the governor's official musician. There he played violin and horn, and later, on the recommendation of Franz Benda, became music director of the Zerbst. He made a name for himself as an excellent violinist and teacher, and was eventually hailed as \"one of the founders of the German violin playing method. This album contains sonatas that showcase the best of his technique. The first and last sonatas are almost identical in terms of tuning and opening melody, but the differences in ornamentation and the gradual development of the pieces into different pieces are indicative of Höchst's ingenuity.
