Although some theories suggest he wrote it all at once in 1953, the frequent use of the “DSCH motif”—which is said to represent Shostakovich himself—and the appearance of melodies shared with his other works lead many to believe that its completion had, in fact, been shelved. While the symphony is open to various interpretations, Jansons regarded Shostakovich as “one of the most serious and sincere composers,” and in this work as well, he directly expresses the emotions of real people and the trauma caused by oppressive politics.
