During his lifetime, he served as organist at the Old Church in Amsterdam and nurtured numerous outstanding disciples—including later generations such as Scheidemann, J. Praetorius, and Scheidt—thereby making a significant contribution to the development of North German organ art, an achievement that ultimately influenced even the great Bach several generations later. Like his Italian contemporary Frescobaldi, he left behind numerous works suitable not only for the organ but also for the harpsichord; however, aside from a few pieces found in manuscripts from other countries, opportunities to hear them together are not particularly frequent today.\nFollowing in the footsteps of founder Hogwood, he serves as music director of the Academy of Ancient Music, while also recording as a harpsichordist and organist, has recorded numerous works by the great masters of the 17th and 18th centuries. It is therefore truly welcome that he has now, at long last, recorded this collection of Sweelinck’s keyboard works on the harpsichord. The instrument used is a model from the workshop of Ruckels (Luccaerts), who was the most important harpsichord maker in the Dutch-speaking world during Sweelinck’s lifetime.
