While his symphonies and the Violin Sonata in A Major are representative examples, during his lifetime Franck was actually known—even before the founding of the Société Nationale de Musique—as an organist of rare talent. Although he composed important works from the mid-to-late period that reexamined Christianity from the perspective of 19th-century artists—much like Liszt and Brahms—surprisingly few of these works have been recorded. This *Expiation* is precisely one such work; aside from the frequently performed interlude (a movement also known as the “Symphonic Poem *Expiation*”), almost no new recordings have appeared since Plasson’s 20th-century recording.\nFrank’s *Atonement* features a narrative centered on a mezzo-soprano soloist and a chorus, with the orchestra weaving a magnificent musical tapestry throughout. Although it is sometimes referred to as an oratorio, it is clear that the focus lies on the orchestral treatment, as evidenced by the fact that Franck himself titled it “Poème-Symphonie” (Poem-Symphony). The conductor for this recording is Hervé Niquet, a French early-music conductor who has recorded Baroque works by Charpentier and Lully for NAXOS and ALPHA, as well as Handel’s *Water Music* for Glossa. It is a rare opportunity to hear this little-known masterpiece performed by this master conductor—who has rapidly built a reputation in recent years for his recordings of modern French works by composers such as Saint-Saëns and Dukas—accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège, the premier ensemble in the composer’s native Belgium.\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Musique en Wallonie","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53525301985569,"sku":"4589538745905","price":2970.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4589538745905.jpg?v=1789730729","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/4589538745905","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
