The venue was the Tonhalle Magg, a temporary replacement for the Tonhalle—which is currently undergoing major renovations—but which has garnered high praise for both its acoustics and its unique architecture, a converted old factory. Järvi has stated that he was convinced it was a wonderful idea to begin his collaboration with the Tonhalle using Messiaen’s works—which he knows intimately and which possess a unique character.\nThe recording features many pre-World War II works, including “The Ascension of Christ,” which can be considered the centerpiece of the program.
