With the exception of the basso continuo, the ensemble is extremely small, with only one performer per part. The three solo cantatas that form the core of the program include arias accompanied by the beautiful sound of a solo or multiple oboes, and several other similar arias have been selected from different cantatas.\nIn addition to two classic masterpieces (BWV 56 and 82)—composed just a few years after Bach became choir director at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, at a time when he was developing his most mature compositional sensibilities—the album features BWV 158, “Bach’s shortest church cantata,” whose date of composition remains a mystery, as well as stylistic variations in various other arias—all of which are made all the more compelling by the sound design made possible by this extremely small ensemble. The interplay of beautiful tones produced by the Baroque oboists—including Bernardini and the Grazzi brothers—and bassoonists—the superlative talents—deliver beautiful layers of sound, while the string section features a succession of renowned soloists, including Olivia Centurioni (violin), a student of Chiara Banchini, and cellist Gaetano Nagillo.
