Together, they present works by two pivotal figures in modern Hungarian musical history: Bartók and Veress.\nBorn in 1907 in Kolozsvár (now Cluj-Napoca, Romania), which was then part of the Kingdom of Hungary, Veres studied under Bartók and Kodály. After the war, he faced government repression for his involvement with the avant-garde of the time and went into exile in Switzerland, where he continued his musical activities for many years. Although he remained an obscure composer for some time afterward, in recent years he has garnered attention for his pivotal role in bridging the generation of Bartók with his former students, including Ligeti, Kurtág, and Holiger. The String Trio included here is a fascinating work that, while containing a wealth of avant-garde elements such as the twelve-tone scale, complex rhythms, and free musical ideas, also clearly reveals its foundation in folk music evocative of the Hungarian countryside. The Piano Quintet, composed by Bartók at the age of 23 and premiered by him on piano, is a compelling work brimming with youthful ambition. The fourth movement even features a Hungarian dance-style motif.
