The theorbo, a large lute, played a behind-the-scenes role as a bass continuo in baroque ensembles. Theorbo, also called \"chitarone\" in Italy, was also a valuable solo instrument, taking advantage of its wide range of sound. In recent years, with the revival of ancient instruments, many contemporary composers have been attracted to their charms, and the popular James MacMillan is included in this collection. Many of the contemporary works pay homage to the instrument's long history and one-of-a-kind character, with titles and forms reminiscent of the Baroque era, but the style is all quite distinctive, such as Benjamin Oliver's eerie ringing of high and low notes. Elizabeth Kenny, a leading contemporary luthier who has also worked with Les Halles Florissants and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, is on her fourth recording for LINN RECORDS, this being her first solo album.
