He later became the Curator of Asian Art at the British Museum and was recognized as an authority on Asian art, including Japanese art. However, at the outbreak of World War I, several of his poems written in mourning for the war became widely known; among them, “Song of Remembrance” has been celebrated not only in Britain but as a tribute to all victims of war.
