While he is renowned as a master who pushed the boundaries of polyphonic music to the extreme in a cappella church music, it is surprisingly little known that he also composed numerous songs for secular audiences. Many of these secular chansons, set to French lyrics and written in the same polyphonic style as his church music, can be arranged for a single singer, with the other parts performed by harmonic instruments such as the lute. On this album, two exceptional talents representing Europe’s new generation have recorded a carefully curated selection of Josquin’s works in a duo format true to the style of the era. While the delicate vocal style of Romain Bogre, who hails from Lyon—one of the centers of early music in southern France—is certainly noteworthy, Slovenian lutenist Bor Zljan, who is active in a wide range of genres including jazz and rock, reflects his unique research into the instrument here. Having examined performance practices from 500 years ago, he attempts to recreate the “bray (howling) lute,” which features triple-wound frets and is played by attaching small pieces resembling picks to the fingers as needed. His tone, accented at times by unique, slightly rough overtones, evokes the rich, evocative beauty of Gothic Flemish painting, which continues to captivate modern audiences. With solo performances that allow the resonance of the verses to shine brilliantly, this album offers a glimpse into an unexpected facet of Josquin’s art.
