Amid the Crusades and the rise of the Mongol Empire, the conflict between the Pope and the German Emperor intensified, and the Italian peninsula was thrown into turmoil. Drawing primarily from the “Cortona Lauda Collection,” composed in central Tuscany during the 13th century, the ensemble uses not only European early instruments such as the medieval fiddle and recorder but also—reflecting the cultural exchange between East and West at the time—the Eastern plucked instrument, the oud, various types of bagpipes, as well as the nyckelharpa—a instrument cherished in Nordic music—we vividly bring to life the rich musical world of nearly 800 years ago, based on interpretations grounded in rigorous musicological research. While the intricacy of polyphonic church music, such as the organum, is evident, the lauda—with their simple, accessible vernacular (Italian) lyrics repeated in a way that lingers strongly in the mind—leave a particularly lasting impression.
