He worked extensively not only as a composer, but also as a performer, playing second violin in the Bohemian Quartet, and as a teacher, teaching Martinů and others at the Prague Conservatory. His grandson by the same name became a world-renowned violinist and is one of the most important figures in the Czech musical tradition. Many of his works are influenced by late Romanticism but have strong folk elements, and you can hear melodies derived from folk songs in some of the pieces on this album, such as \"Village Serenades. The album also includes works by Ottilie, who became his wife, and by his son Josef of the same name. You can witness the inheritance of tradition.
