The “24 Preludes” is a collection of highly diverse works spanning more than 18 years of composition; they are among the most challenging pieces to perform, requiring not only exceptional technical skill but also a wide range of musical expression. In particular, Op. 3 No. 2—known for its dramatic style—is a piece from another collection, *Fantasy Pieces*, and is a popular piece said to mimic the sound of the bells at the Moscow Kremlin. The remaining 23 pieces were composed at various points throughout Rachmaninoff’s career; however, like Chopin’s work of the same name, they cover all 24 keys, and no two pieces share a similar atmosphere. Furthermore, although this work was conceived over a long period of time, related motifs are hidden throughout each piece; Giltburg is conscious of identifying and weaving these together (as detailed in the program notes), giving the collection a sense of unity while masterfully bringing out the character of each piece. As a result, many listeners will likely discover through this performance that small melodic movements—which might otherwise be overlooked—actually serve as foreshadowing for the climax. The explosive outpouring of energy in the passionate pieces, and the tender, elegant touch in the lyrical ones—this wide range of expression is a charm unique to the technically gifted Giltburg. Giltburg also wrote the liner notes for this album and selected a landscape photograph he took himself (featuring two trees) for the cover art.
