Named after a work by Voltaire, the group opens this album with the overture to Bernstein’s musical *Candide*—itself based on Voltaire’s original—and continues with the masterpiece *West Side Story*. and you’ll find yourself increasingly drawn in by the lively rhythms and the beauty of the melancholic phrasing (arranged by pianist-arranger Bruno Fontaine, who has released a string of acclaimed albums on Transart featuring Mozart and Bach with a French jazz sensibility). The main focus is Ravel’s masterpiece, and the richly colorful expression here is truly magnificent. Facilitating this fruitful encounter between Bernstein, who lived in the 20th century, and Ravel, born in the 19th, is the 21st-century composer Benjamin Atayal. “Asfar,” written for this trio by Atayir—who, like two of the members, hails from Toulouse—begins with a dialogue between the two strings and the piano, but this combination shifts continuously, evolving into a thrilling, tension-filled work characterized by a lively interplay among the three parts. From Haydn to Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, and Vasquez, they have already incorporated most of the renowned piano trios into their repertoire.
