The score used for this production is the so-called “Neapolitan version,” created by the Italian composer Leonardo Leo in response to this overwhelming success. This version was adapted for the Neapolitan audience—with slight changes to the setting and the addition of new characters—by Leo and other composers who assisted in rehearsals when Grimaldi, the singer who first performed *Rinaldo* in London, was set to perform the work in Naples. The score itself had been lost for a long time.\nFor this production, Seki reconstructed the newly discovered “Neapolitan version,” and Sangarti, who directed the staging, set the story in the 1980s, resulting in a truly fascinating performance. While the original theme centered on a conflict between Christians and the Turks, this production replaces it with a battle between ’80s pop-rock and heavy metal (or so it’s called—whether it actually is or not is another matter). The cast is full of familiar faces: Freddie Mercury, Gee Simmons, David Bowie, Elon John, Seal…? Among them, Freddie’s rendition of “Let Me Cry” is definitely a highlight.\nHowever, underlying it all is a reflection on love and life.
