In the “Woman Without a Shadow” Symphonic Fantasy—a work not often performed—the orchestra exquisitely controls the beautiful melodic lines and overflowing harmonies, allowing the audience to fully savor the joy of being enveloped in exquisite sound. Furthermore, the flowing phrasing and sophisticated articulation in “The Viennese Temperament” truly showcase Mesto’s mastery. In “La Valse”—the only French piece on this recording, written as a tribute to the Viennese waltz—the elegant yet steadily ascending structure never falters even as it reaches the coda, masterfully expressing musical chaos.
