It was the vihuela—which, while resembling a guitar in shape, could also perform intricate polyphonic music like a lute—that garnered attention as a bridge to Iberia’s long-standing traditions. With just two players, it could perform polyphonic music consisting of four to five voices, and its delicate and diverse tonal expression made it an excellent accompaniment to the human voice. The two of them—Europe’s finest plucked-string instrumentalists today and the legendary singer Keel—are the ones who can bring out these qualities to the fullest! Although music for the vihuela was widely used, very few collections of compositions have survived.
