The female composers on this album all share a common thread of having lived through turbulent times: Saariaho, whose native Finland gained independence in 1917; Gubaidulina, who also lived in a reformed Russia; Chitkian, born in Armenia like Merikyan; and Raquel Kiaro, a talented student of Saariaho's. and Raquel Chiaro, a talented student of Saariaho's. All of these women's works are powerful and varied. Each of these women's works is powerful and full of power, defying prejudice and pressure. The piano sounds produced by Melikyan's powerful touch, even in clusters, have an overwhelming presence that lingers in the ear.
