Essentially, every work by Torli that has been revived in modern times can be called a masterpiece… He was a genius who composed music rich in melodic beauty and dynamism, embodying the very essence of Italian music around 1700.\nFrom around the late 17th century, the music of the Southern Netherlands (later Belgium) underwent a unique development as French music—descending from the lineage of Lully—and Italian music, which musicians from Italy were gradually establishing, vied for dominance. Amidst this turmoil, Torli—who, alongside his Italian contemporary Fiocco, helped establish the appeal of Italian music in the region—composed the oratorio *The Vanity of the World*, premiered in 1706, a refined and substantial work that graced the season of Lent. Performed with an intimate ensemble consisting of just a single oboe, strings, basso continuo, and a small number of singers, this music was composed—much like the French *Leçon des Ténèbres*—for a time when extravagance was not permitted. However, this album features a landmark broadcast recording from 1988, and the lineup—featuring Musica Antiqua Köln at the height of its powers alongside a host of early music singers—is simply spectacular! This recording, made during a period when the group—known for its thrilling, dynamic performances born of a deep understanding of the subtleties of period instruments—was filled with virtuosos who would later go on to form their own ensembles, is absolutely not to be missed.
