This new release features none other than *The Village Soothsayer*, a major work by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who made his mark on history as an Enlightenment philosopher... This new recording, performed on period instruments in accordance with 18th-century performance practices, is nothing short of a treasure. Premiered in Versailles in 1752—long after Rameau had already brought a fresh breeze to French opera— and published publicly in Paris the following year. It features French lyrics set to catchy melodies reminiscent of Italian music—a work so masterful that it even contradicts Rousseau’s own theory that “French is unsuitable for opera”… Among the French public, who had become accustomed to the symphonies of the Mannheim School and cutting-edge Italian opera, this work was a huge success despite disruptions at its premiere; it even inspired numerous imitations, including serving as the basis for the young Mozart’s *Bastien and Bastienne*. Despite its significance, this work is rarely recorded; therefore, it is of great significance that the rising stars of the French early music scene, led by Sébastien Delan—who has a proven track record with labels such as Alpha—have undertaken a new recording at the Palace of Versailles, the very venue of its premiere. Delan seems to have consciously crafted an interpretation that precisely streamlines both the orchestral and choral sections, vividly bringing out the work’s simple yet delicate charm within a chamber-music-like atmosphere.
