Harold Färberman, All-Star Percussion Ensemble

This is an album featuring 10 percussionists selected from major American orchestras, including Everett (Vic) Firth of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, who was a timpanist with the Saito Kinen Orchestra. The album was produced by Andrew Kazdin, famous for his work with the New York Philharmonic during the Boulez and Mehta eras and for his albums of Glenn Gould. Arrangements and conducting are by Harold Farberman. He began his career at age 20 as the youngest percussionist ever with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for 12 years, led by Munsch and Reinsdorf. Later, in 1963, he left the Boston Symphony Orchestra to devote himself to composing and conducting, and went on to conduct the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, among others, as is well known. Andrew Kazdin was a percussionist before becoming a producer for Columbia Records, and the point of this album is that the artist, conductor, arranger, and producer all know their percussion instruments.
