From the 17th to 18th centuries, the Benda family, which originated in Bohemia, was a major force in European music. They produced numerous composers and instrumentalists, and their influence was immeasurable, as their descendants are still active today. One of them, Friedrich Benda, son of Franz, the best known of the Benda family, received his first musical instruction from his father. He was an accomplished pianist and violinist, and worked as a chamber musician at the court in Potsdam from 1765 to 1810, where he left several operas, concertos, and chamber works. This album features his "Concerto for Viola," which was rare even at the time. These are all technical and beautiful works that show a thorough knowledge of the performance of the viola, which does not see the light of day very often. The performer, Eric Susi, was the winner of the "Third Lionel Turtis International Viola Competition" held in 1988. He has put so much thought into this work that he has revised and published the score. Naxos Japan
