His latest album, *Kin*, released via Editions Mego, marks his first release since the 2020 masterpiece *Peel*!\n\nHis close friend Fennesz, with whom he toured the U.S., contributes to one track!\n\nKMRU has long blended environmental sounds with electronic soundscapes through his unique sensibility, centered on field recordings and drones. Having performed at festivals and concerts around the world, he has become one of the leading figures in the contemporary ambient and experimental scene. On this album, he boldly incorporates noise, distortion, and the texture of the guitar more than ever before, venturing into new sonic territory.\n\nThe concept for *Kin* began with a conversation he had with the late Peter Rehberg, founder of Editions Mego, about “what kind of work to create after *Peel*.” Production began in Nairobi in early 2021 but was temporarily halted following Peter Rehberg’s death. Production slowly resumed in 2022 and was eventually completed over time. As indicated by the words “For Pita.” inscribed at the end of the album, this work also embodies deep respect and remembrance for him.\n\nIn the opening track, “With Trees Where We Can See,” a warm, undulating melody gently guides the listener into the world of the album. The following track, “Blurred,” was born from his collaboration with Fennesz, with whom he toured the U.S. alongside KMRU in 2022. The sound of guitar strings plucked by fingernails overlaps with a vast, shimmering drone, creating a beautiful yet otherworldly sonic space characteristic of Editions Mego.\n\nMeanwhile, “TheyAreHere” unfolds into a shadowed, melancholic drone, while “Maybe” evolves into a storm of euphoric electronic sounds. In “WeAre,” sharp noise and complex rhythmic patterns clash, leaving a strong impression of a new facet of KMRU. Finally, on the closing track “By Absence,” acoustic resonances intertwine with kaleidoscopic soundscapes, bringing the album to a close while simultaneously inviting the listener into another world beyond.\n\nSerene ambience, beautifully expansive drones, gritty noise, guitar reverberations, and countless textures that shift ever so subtly. *Kin* is layered with intricate details that cannot be fully grasped on a single listen.
