It’s clear that Myra feels the same way. It’s rare to hear music in which the two are so completely focused on the moment, and in which the truths deep within their hearts are expressed with such candor.\nRecorded live at the 2024 Leibniz Jazz Festival, this album can be described as a profound and, above all, beautiful musical dialogue.\n\nMelford explains, “We have a strong affinity for each other’s playing styles, and we felt that selecting pieces with a high degree of interpretive freedom was a wonderful solution for maintaining a shared focus throughout the concert. In my compositions, I aimed for pieces with simple structures that still held the potential for diverse developments. I prioritized striking a balance between maintaining a common focus and ensuring ample freedom of expression.”\nFujii took a similar compositional approach for the duo. “To set the mood and direction, I prepared both older pieces and new ones composed specifically for this duo,” says Fujii. “We both compose a lot of music, and it’s a pleasure to perform her works. It’s the perfect way to gain musical direction and ideas.” In other words, while the compositions provide the framework, it is improvisation—that is, intimate dialogue—that forms the core of their music.\n“I feel a very strong sense of narrative in the way Kyoko develops her improvisations. I’m always impressed whenever I hear her play solo,” says Melford. “And she brings that focus and sharpness to our duo as well. She’s a wonderful listener with exceptional responsiveness. Because she’s completely focused on the moment, it’s easy for us to connect and build the music together.”\n“Myra is wonderful,” says Fujii. “She listens carefully to my playing and always plays the right note at the right moment.
