The first movement opens with overwhelmingly powerful music, and from the following scherzo through the finale, the performance unfolds with intense dynamism; despite being a monaural recording, this is a release well worth a close listen.\n=========================================================================\nEven at our company, which actively releases Furtwängler recordings, the number of titles featuring Furtwängler’s Bruckner is extremely limited. Why is that? After all, when it comes to Furtwängler, he is well-known for his interpretations of composers like Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, and Wagner; listeners have high expectations for these works, and there are indeed many recordings that can be considered classics. However, the situation is different when it comes to Bruckner; for some reason, there seems to be a sort of fixed notion that “Furtwängler’s Bruckner isn’t any good!” During Furtwängler’s lifetime, the Haas edition was the most recent version of Bruckner’s scores, and he was limited to using either the Urtext (first edition) or the Haas edition. On top of that, the historical context in Japan at the time meant that Bruckner was not yet widely listened to. As a result, I feel that the harsh criticism he received back then has persisted to this day. Of course, I’m not saying everything is perfect, but at the very least, this performance of Symphony No. 8 is so magnificent that it can easily be counted among the great recordings. Here, too, Furtwängler creates a performance of grand scale, combined with the unique tension of a live performance, a compositional mastery that has thoroughly analyzed every detail, and the powerful, spirited playing of the Berlin Philharmonic—it is a magnificent performance in every respect. While such performances often tend to lack focus, here he masterfully controls the tempo, holding the listener in suspense right up to the brink of collapse, then releasing the tension to the fullest before building it back up again, culminating in a magnificent climax.
