The impression that he was a late bloomer likely stems from the fact that in his later years, he left behind many recordings for EMI with the Philharmonia Orchestra (and the New Philharmonia), which could be considered his “own orchestra.” However, in addition to the Philharmonia, he also guest-conducted many other renowned orchestras, and fortunately, this performance with the Berlin Philharmonic was preserved. The performance heard here dates from a period that could truly be described as Klemperer’s prime—though the tempos are not as slow as those of his very late years—and in every aspect—from the majestic flow of the sound, the balance among the instruments, the overall structure, the dynamics, and the atmosphere—it exudes the dignity of a first-rate performance. Since it’s a live recording, there are some minor mistakes, but Klemperer handles them with such calm composure—as if nothing had happened—and seems to immerse himself single-mindedly in Bruckner’s spiritual world; you’re sure to be drawn in by the rich, dynamic sound the moment you hear it. Klemperer also recorded this piece with the Philharmonia Orchestra (1960 EMI recording), and since the performances were made around the same time, it might be interesting to compare them. I’ve checked catalogs and the like; while it may have been released in the past, I believe this recording is currently difficult to obtain. This might be a good opportunity to immerse yourself fully in Klemperer’s music.\n*Please note that since this was mastered from an old tape, there may be some noise. We appreciate your understanding.\n*The recording date is the one generally accepted.
