Although this performance of the “Ninth” took place about one month before the live recording of the “Eve of Hitler’s Birthday” concert [ARCHIPEL; ARPCD270]—which became a topic of conversation as the first-ever release of that recording—it is considered one of Furtwängler’s greatest interpretations of the work, on par with the “Bayreuth recording.” The performance is incredibly youthful, energetic, and dynamic. The ensemble’s presence, the intensity of the timpani’s most powerful strikes, and the magnificent singing of the Kittel Choir…\nThe B-side features the equally dramatic overture to *Coriolanus* and Schubert’s “Great” Symphony—one of Furtwängler’s finest performances with the Berlin Philharmonic!\nThis overture is considered the best among Furtwängler’s recordings [of which three are known]. Although this famous recording has been released in various formats, the intensity of the performance is truly astonishing. The fluid tempo, and the impact of the timpani and the full orchestra in the opening and closing codas.\nAnd then, Schubert. This is a famous recording from a live subscription concert, widely known on the DG label. The performance vividly illustrates the depth of Furtwängler’s artistry at that time.\n*This reissue uses early LPs from the former Soviet Union, which critics acknowledge as having the richest atmosphere (Symphony No. 9 “Choral” is the VSG pressing; the other two pieces are the blue “Great Fire” Gast 56 pressings).\nAlthough both are LPs, they contain a wealth of detail and have long been highly regarded for their sound quality—but the LPs themselves were so expensive that they were items one couldn’t easily afford.\nFor this reissue, we eliminated noise as much as possible without using equipment such as equalizers, noise reduction systems, or noise-editing software.
