He traveled to Paris to conduct the Orchestre National de France from the Martinon era, and this extremely rare, previously unreleased recording is now being released by Spectrum, the guardian label of historical recordings. This unexpected combination yields a truly magnificent musical expression. In this “Great” performance, the French-style vibrato in the opening horns is, as one would expect from Vant, somewhat restrained. However, as the piece progresses, the softness and warmth of the strings and winds take on a depth of flavor unimaginable for Vant at this stage of his career, evoking a sense of surprise and deep emotion. Furthermore, the famous second theme of the second movement—which Schumann praised so highly—is exquisite in its softness, dignity, and three-dimensionality, bringing tears to my eyes. Above all, I am delighted by the elegant flavor of the cello part, sung in the French style of yesteryear. Furthermore, the recording is truly enjoyable and excellent—a superb close-mic stereo recording reminiscent of the golden age of Decca stereo sound.
