This is the first release of a live recording of an unaccompanied recital given by Janos Starker (1924-2013), one of the most famous cellists of the 20th century, on March 9, 1987, in the small hall of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. Starker was 63 years old at the time of the performance, and this is a masterful performance that reveals his musical depth.\n\nThe program includes J.S. Bach's Third Symphony, Cassadó, and Kodály. Starker's commercial recordings tend to give the impression of a rugged, heroic sound, but in this Bach performance, one is surprised by the simply beautiful tone produced by his fluid bowing.\n\nAlthough session recordings of Cassadó and Kodály also exist, the exuberance of the live performance is evident in the sound here, and even in their sixties, the musicians still play aggressively.
