For the first time, the orchestra tackles a concerto: Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, K., “Turkish,” performed in collaboration with Joseph Lin, first violinist of the renowned Juilliard String Quartet. Joseph Lynn serves as both soloist and conductor, and the cadenza is his own composition. Symphony No. 29 is conducted by Nishiwaki, as usual. The recording took place at the “Vienna Hall” in the Fuchu no Mori Arts Theater, renowned for its excellent acoustics. Both Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 and Symphony No. 29 are in A major; as Karl Barth noted, “A major is the keynote of Mozart’s life.” Other works in A major include the Clarinet Quintet, K. 581; the Clarinet Concerto, K. 622; and the Piano Concerto No. 23, K. 488—all of which are imbued with a distinctive sense of melancholy.\n\nMozart is challenging. Symphony No. 5, in particular, is no walk in the park!\nIt is both brilliant and restrained, humble yet strong-willed,\nbrimming with joy yet tinged with a hint of sadness,\nelegant without being pretentious, alluring without being vulgar.\nI have finally encountered a performance of Symphony No. 5 like this.\nOn the other hand, Nishiwaki’s performance of Symphony No. 29 is truly natural. There is no pretension whatsoever. There isn’t a single showy moment.\nIt is truly sincere.
