One indication of this is the orchestra’s receipt of the Concert Performance Award (Japanese Artist) at the 21st Music Pen Club Music Awards (2008); indeed, some music magazines have even ranked it among the top orchestras in Japan. A major driving force behind this success is Hubert Soudant, who succeeded Kazuyoshi Akiyama—who devoted 40 years of his life to nurturing the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra—as Music Director.\nHubert Soudant was born in Maastricht, the Netherlands, in 1946. He won the Besançon International Conducting Competition (1971) and the Guido Cantelli International Competition (1975), and took second place at the Karajan International Conducting Competition (1971); yet he never let his fame go to his head; instead, he steadily built his career, primarily in Europe. After serving as music director of the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra for 13 years, he assumed the position of music director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra in 2004. Sudaan chose Haydn as his starting point, placing classical composers such as Mozart and Beethoven at the center of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra’s programs. Furthermore, he has devoted his efforts to deepening the orchestra’s artistic capabilities through last year’s (2008) Schubert cycle, this year’s (2009) Schumann–Brahms cycle, devoting his efforts to further deepening the orchestra’s artistic capabilities.\nBruckner’s Symphony No. 7 was recorded over two days in sessions at the orchestra’s home venue, Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall; it was performed quite naturally as an extension of this classical-based approach; the conductor and orchestra, who know the hall’s acoustics inside and out, filled the entire space with a rich, mature sound full of depth. Suddarth himself, who has conducted numerous world-class orchestras—including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, and the Milan Scala Philharmonic—stated with conviction after the recording was completed that “the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra has now grown into a world-class orchestra.” This recording, which is a source of pride on the global stage, serves as a testament to that statement.
