It is a portrait of Jean-Philippe Rameau, attributed to Joseph Aved. This great composer and music theorist, renowned for his operas and harpsichord works, is depicted not at the keyboard, but holding a violin. The painting captures a fleeting moment, as if time had stood still. Rameau appears to be about to pluck a string, with the index finger of his left hand positioned where it would be for the note B-natural. It seems as if he is inviting the viewer to listen to that enigmatic note. When I first saw this portrait, I felt a desire to create a musical world inspired by it. I wanted to step into the canvas and reveal the lifelong relationship between the composer and his violin. Conceived as a journey of discovery, this program spans from Rameau’s youth—when, according to anecdotal accounts, he joined a troupe of traveling musicians in southern France and performed as a violinist—to the time he fully immersed himself in the world of opera with his first full-length stage work, *Hippolyte et Alcyone*.
