Yuji Takahashi, one of Japan's foremost composers and pianists, and Mutsumi Hatano, a mezzo-soprano equally at home in early music and the contemporary repertoire, have worked together on a great many projects over the years.\nThe programme includes \"Setting Out\", a new work written for Hatano setting three poems from Kazue Morisaki's collection \"Sasabue Hitotsu\" (2004), and \"I Am Twelve\" from 1977 - works in which the words of poets reach across time to speak directly to the heart.\n\"I Am Twelve\" is a song cycle in which Takahashi set eleven poems from the collection of the same name by Masafumi Oka, who took his own life at the age of twelve in the 1970s. Drawing on children's songs from Amami and on Korean folk music, it is a groundbreaking body of work.\n\"Farewell to Sawara Village\" sets a poem by Makoto Tsuji - son of the wandering Dadaist Jun Tsuji and the women's liberation activist and writer Noe Ito, and himself the author of a substantial body of paintings, writings and anecdotes. Composed for Mutsumi Hatano in 2010, it takes the form of variations on \"Der Abschied\", the closing movement of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde.\nIvor Gurney, active as both composer and poet, lost his health to gas on the battlefield and spent the second half of his life in hospital, where he continued to compose and to write poetry. \"Bach and the Sentry\", his poem about a sentry recalling a Bach prelude at the front, is included here.\n\nMutsumi Hatano (voice)\nHatano made her debut in the lute songs of Shakespeare's era. As a soloist in Baroque sacred music and oratorio she has appeared frequently with period-instrument orchestras under Masaaki Suzuki, Ryo Terakado and Masato Suzuki. On the opera stage she has won acclaim as Ottavia in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea, Dido in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, and Phèdre in Rameau's Hippolyte et Aricie.
