Harmonielehre, premiered in 1985, was inspired by a dream of the composer's own, in which \"a huge container ship in San Francisco Bay took off into the sky like a spacecraft\"; the opening hammers out E minor chords like a gun salute. The violin concerto Scheherazade.2 was prompted by an exhibition devoted to the Thousand and One Nights at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, and in particular by an image of Scheherazade there. \"The casual brutality toward women set me thinking about the news images we encounter almost daily, and out of that came the idea of writing a dramatic symphony with the solo violin as its protagonist,\" Adams has said. The work carries a message of protest against violence and oppression: pursued by fanatics and put on trial, Scheherazade finds her freedom in the finale. The soloist is Leila Josefowicz, who gave the 2015 premiere.\n\n[A commission marking Dudamel's appointment in Los Angeles]\nCity Noir, conducted by Dudamel. This three-movement work was premiered to great acclaim at the concerts inaugurating his tenure as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It was written under the influence of film noir, with its decadent portrayal of American society in the 1940s and 50s. Minimalist elements are kept in check in favour of a wide range of references, from Stravinsky to Gershwin, Bernstein, Milhaud and John Coltrane, with jazz rhythms entering in the central movement.
