The music he creates with pianist Masashi Okada—with whom he has performed for over 15 years—is a rich dialogue born of their deep mutual trust, breathing new life into the spirit and traditions of Catalonia!\n\n\u003cluis claret\u003e\nAlthough the Claret family is originally from Catalonia, his parents opposed General Franco’s dictatorship and went into exile in Andorra (located on the border between Spain and France). Luis Claret was born in Andorra in 1951, and his godfather was Pablo Casals—considered the greatest cellist of the 20th century—who was a close friend of his father. Inspired by Casals, he aspired to become a cellist and received a rigorous musical education from the very basics under Enric Casals (Pablo Casals’s younger brother, who was not a cellist). After graduating with honors from the Liceu Conservatory, he honed his skills in France, Italy, and the United States, studying under Maurice Gendron, György Sebök, and Bernard Greenhouse.\nHe won first prize at the Bologna International Competition (1975), the Casals International Competition (1976), and the Rostropovich International Competition (1977) in quick succession, instantly attracting attention and launching his career on the world stage. To date, he has performed with major orchestras around the world, including the Washington National Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of such masters as P. Boulez, K. Münchinger, M. Rostropovich, and V. Neumann. He is also actively engaged on the international stage as a soloist, performing in recitals and at music festivals around the world. At the closing ceremony of the Barcelona Olympics, he represented Catalonia as a musician, performing the Catalan folk song “Song of the Birds” with soprano Victoria de los Ángeles. His repertoire spans from Bach to contemporary works, and he has premiered many pieces dedicated to him by renowned contemporary composers such as H. Dutilleux, W. Lutosławski, and P. Boulez. In addition to his performing career, he is actively involved in a wide range of activities, including serving as a judge for international competitions, mentoring younger musicians, and directing music festivals. He has also released numerous CDs featuring solo, chamber music, and concerto performances. He is currently a professor at the New England Conservatory.
