The quartet, known as Collision, was completed by drummer Dwight James (drummer for *Sounds of Revelation*, known as the ultimate Philly avant-jazz-funk album) and saxophonist Mike Falcon. The album consists entirely of original compositions by the members and was recorded in a single take. The album’s greatest appeal lies in its unique atmosphere—a casual modal style infused with lightness and dynamism. Highlights include “Kenya’s Horizon,” a waltz-like track brimming with the same exhilaration as Coltrane’s “My Favorite Things,” “Marionette,” which races from an abstract intro to a breakneck pace in the latter half, and “The Downer,” with its repeated, vivid beat changes—these tracks showcase an innovative acoustic sound that resonates with contemporary club jazz.
