He studied cello and conducting at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, organized China’s first professional orchestra, and conducted the premiere of the famous piano concerto “The Yellow River.” He studied abroad in Moscow under Nikolai Anosov and served as the long-time conductor of the China National Symphony Orchestra. He performed with nearly every musician who visited China, and his friendship with Isaac Stern is well-known. He also traveled to various countries as a guest conductor and was hailed as the “Karajan of China.” As a pioneer, his performances were truly in a league of their own. There was not a trace of ambiguity—only performances brimming with conviction. He made full use of surprising accents, sudden accelerations, and abrupt decelerations, frequently making changes to the score. The finale of the Ninth Symphony features a powerful ritardando reminiscent of Mengelberg that is truly breathtaking. The orchestra is on the smaller side, and the Ninth is sung in Chinese. The casual nature of the recording—with no singer or choir names listed—adds to its charm.
