Marie Nishiyama commands not only keyboard instruments such as the organ and harpsichord but also plucked instruments such as the harp; she has a repertoire of medieval and Renaissance music from before Bach; and she has performed toccatas in practice, both improvised and within seventeenth-century sacred music. The perspective that only she could bring is one filled with living lines of sound and powerful resonance. Seven great toccatas in which the passion and ambition of the young Bach are impossible to miss.

<marie nishiyama>
Internationally recognised as a rare musician equally at home on two historical instruments, the harpsichord and the historical harp, Nishiyama has taken part in countless concerts, festivals and recordings. She has performed with musicians from an unusually wide range of fields, among them René Jacobs, Bob Young, Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains, Carlos Núñez, Michala Petri, Corina Marti, Yosuke Yamashita, Mutsumi Hatano and the ensemble Antonello, and she appears frequently on television. Her recordings "Bach: Inventions & Sinfonias", "Bach: Italian Concerto & French Overture" and "Scarlatti: Magician of the Keyboard" were all named Special Selections by "Record Geijutsu" magazine, while "Bach: English Suites", "Bach: Goldberg Variations" and "An Encounter with the Baroque Harp" received the same magazine's runner-up Special Selection. "El arte de tañer fantasía: Keyboard Music of the Iberian Peninsula", released on the Spanish label Enquiriadis, was chosen as a top recommendation by the Spanish magazine "Ritmo". She is equally highly regarded as a specialist in medieval music: "Tristan's Lament", played on gothic harp and organetto, was named a runner-up Special Selection by "Record Geijutsu", a Special Selection by "Stereo" and a recommended disc by "Ongaku Gendai". Her 2018 release "C. B. Balbastre: Pièces de clavecin, Book 1" was a recommended disc in the Asahi Shimbun and a Special Selection in "Record Geijutsu". She graduated in piano from the Tokyo College of Music and completed the graduate course there before continuing her studies at the Civica Scuola di Musica di Milano and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. She won first prize in the harpsichord division of the 11th Yamanashi Early Music Competition (returning as a juror for the 23rd) and received the Tochigi "Kura no Machi" Music Festival Prize. She is artistic director of the early music workshop "Shinshu Early Music Village" and a part-time lecturer at the Musashino Academia Musicae.
Naxos Japan</marie>
