Description:
Paul Juon was born in Russia, where his Swiss grandfather had emigrated. Blessed with an artistic family background, Yuon showed musical talent from an early age (his younger brother Konstantin became a successful painter) and studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Taneyev and Arensky, and later at the Higher School of Music in Berlin, where he received further instruction from Voldemar Barguil. Once back in Russia, he became a professor at the Baku Conservatory and a critic, but in 1898 he returned to Berlin to teach at the Higher School of Music, where he was promoted to professor in 1906 and trained many students. Following the Nazi invasion, he moved to Switzerland, his grandfather's homeland, where he lived out the rest of his life. Although he is known for his symphonies, operas, and chamber music, there is still much room for research in piano music, and the works heard here have a unique atmosphere with a Russian flavor and a Debussy-esque impressionistic sound.
