Although Fite wanted to study music from an early age, he lost his parents when he graduated from junior high school and had no money to pay for a music teacher, so he taught himself music. He studied philosophy and law in Prague, and when he graduated at the age of 22, he hesitated between becoming a lawyer or a musician, and eventually decided to work at Prague's City Hall. But he also continued with music, composing symphonies, violin concertos, and songs. Although they have been completely forgotten, the four remaining string quartets show the transition of early Romantic music in the Czech Republic from Beethoven to Dvořák.
