The production drew devoted Strauss enthusiasts from around the world and was a triumph, as was the co-produced run at La Scala in June 2014. Between the two, on 7 October 2013, the director Patrice Chéreau died, making this his final major undertaking. The setting is an enclosed courtyard-like space ringed by grey buildings, the characters dressed in ordinary modern clothes. At first glance it looks almost plain, yet every role is handled with intense theatrical purpose, even the servants of the household are woven tightly into the drama of revenge, and the carefully planted foreshadowing and small pieces of stagecraft tell superbly. The result is a raw, vividly human Elektra of the kind only Chéreau could have made.\nEvery bit the equal of the staging is Salonen's conducting. He shapes an Elektra score too often driven through on sheer roar and impact with exceptional precision and intelligence, achieving a performance of exhilarating sharpness. The technical command of the Orchestre de Paris, seldom heard in the pit, is equally impressive.\nThe cast could hardly be bettered today. In the title role, Evelyn Herlitzius throws herself utterly into the part, her searing acting and singing giving her overwhelming presence. Waltraud Meier's Klytämnestra brings intelligent handling of the text and gripping stage presence to this crucial role, while Adrianne Pieczonka's Chrysothemis sings beautifully and with great feeling. Tom Randle is a robust, striking Aegisth, and Mikhail Petrenko brings a quietly commanding presence to Orest. The veterans in the smaller roles deserve attention too: Franz Mazura, born in 1924, was 89 at the time; Donald McIntyre, born in 1934, was 78; and Roberta Alexander, the Fifth Maid, born in 1949, was 64.
